![]() The meaning behind the 12 gods still remains a subject that must be further investigated. There is also an 11-foot-high relief depicting Nergal, the goddess of the Underworld who was in many aspects similar to Irkalla, the Babylonian goddess of the Land of the Dead. Lion-headed demons guard the entrance and the main relief depicts the 12 gods of the Underworld, each carrying sickle-shaped swords. “We suggest that Chamber A as a whole can be viewed as symbolizing everything on Earth and in heaven, including the Sun, the Moon, the five visible planets, some constellations and stars, the north celestial pole, and the northern circumpolar realm,” the researchers explain.Ĭhamber B may represent the Underworld. Intercalary months could have been introduced intermittently to synchronise the Moon with the solar year.” Chamber B seems to symbolise the netherworld,” the researchers explain.Īccording to this study, “the reliefs in Chamber A are arranged in groups that may keep track of and display days, synodic months and solar years. We interpret the central panel with the supreme deities, at the far north end of Chamber A, as a reference to the northern stars, the circumpolar realm and the world axis. Static levels and celestial cyclicities are emphasised throughout the sanctuary – every single relief relates to this system. “We suggest that the sanctuary in its entirety represents a symbolic image of the cosmos, including its static levels (earth, sky, Underworld) and the cyclical processes of renewal and rebirth (day/night, lunar phases, summer/winter). Some of the carvings are now quite faded leading some experts to believe that evidence of what the site was used for may have been missed. The rock-cut reliefs of 64 deities in the main chamber of Yazilikaya, a Hittite rock sanctuary associated with Hattuša, the Hittite capital in central Anatolia, can be broken into groups marking days, synodic months and solar years,” the team wrote in the science paper.Įxamination of the 3,200year-old carving reveals that the Hittite believed the Universe was a multilayered system composed of three levels or realms, including the Earth (the surface world) and the sky (the celestial world) and the subterranean Underworld. An interest in astral phenomena is also reflected in Hittite documents, architecture and art. “Evidence of systematic astronomical observation and the impact of celestial knowl-edge on culture is plentiful in the Bronze Age societies of Egypt, Mesopotamia and Europe. It “formed a knot tying the country to the sky,” the science team explained in their study. The open-air shrine served as an extension of the city’s sacred power. The Yazilikaya rock sanctuary was an important religious site. The researchers have now conducted an in-depth study of the celestial aspects of the Hittite religion with a focus on cosmic symbolism at Yazilikaya.Īccording to the theory presented in this new study, the 3,200year-old rock art provides insight into how the people of the Hittite kingdom understood the cosmos. ![]()

While cloud-based applications are certainly not appropriate in all situations (there are obvious competitive advantages to having robust, customized solutions), the speed with which companies can deploy solutions, even across borders and continents as Chirch is doing, will help ensure we'll continue to hear more about this buzzword trend. If the material for a specific job is not arriving for another day or two, the shop can move to the next job in line so a machine doesn't stand idle for days.” They can also view material purchase orders, so if the required material is not on hand, they can see when it is due to arrive. From monitors across the shop floor, they can view all the following: open sales orders, due dates, quantities, finished and on-hand inventory, and ship location. That led Chirch to institute a policy where it would only accept less than 10 percent overage.Īccording to an Epicor case study, “improved information access has empowered Chirch's employees, giving them more confidence in their decision making. The software, for instance, helped Chirch identify instances when its suppliers were shipping too much product, leading to excess inventory. So a company like Chirch, for instance, can leverage the inventory management capabilities of Epicor's software to manage and monitor its operations both domestically and overseas, in a shared environment. Adopting cloud-based applications on a software-as-as-service model is very much like paying a monthly utility bill, she says. When you rent, you don't have to pay a hefty down payment up front, nor do you have to know anything about maintenance. Hansen likens the differences between traditional server-based computing and cloud computing to buying vs. Business relationships in the value chain can be increasingly supported online, using a social business framework for support with the intersection of Web 2.0, Enterprise 2.0, and collaboration platforms and applications.” So clearly, cloud computing is gaining more adherents every day. In fact, in an MH&L article earlier this year, IDC analyst Simon Ellis predicted, “We expect 2011 to find an increasing number of manufacturers exploring how they can use cloud computing to address technology gaps, most often for communication but also for collaboration. Speaking at the Design & Manufacturing Midwest trade show in Chicago this week, Hansen referenced a study by analyst firm IDC that predicts cloud computing to become a $9.5 billion market by 2015. Similarly, anybody who has uploaded or shared a video on Youtube or a photo on Shutterfly has experienced the power of cloud computing.Įvangelizing its applicability in business apps, particularly supply chain apps, has taken a bit more persuading, but Christine Hansen, product marketing manager at Epicor Software Corp., makes a compelling case. Google, for instance, has made its software packages available via the cloud for years. It's just become a lot more common, especially as the mainstream has made Internet-based repositories of software applications so ubiquitous and so easy for users to share the same app. This strategy has been made possible thanks to Chirch's adoption of cloud computing.Ĭloud computing is the latest trend in software solutions, even though it's not necessarily all that new. One small Midwest-based manufacturer of precision metal stampings, Chirch Global Manufacturing, has adopted a strategy that it describes as onshoring/offshoring –maintaining a presence in China while keeping jobs in its native Illinois backyard. Nearshoring has become a popular trend (perhaps more popular as a concept than an actual practice) for companies looking to gain more control over their extended supply chains by bringing work that had been offshored to Asia back closer to home. ![]() ![]() Experience an engaging story about choices and consequences, dreams and reality, magic and science, chaos and order, and the three people whose actions will shape the course of history - in all worlds. #Steam dreamfall chapters download#Activate the CD Key on your Steam client to download Dreamfall Chapters. Its eventual fate remains a mystery.Īlthough it did not achieve military success, Turtle was seen by men of the time as a revolutionary development. Although recovered, Turtle saw no further service. Before Turtle could be re-deployed, it was sunk along with the sloop transporting it by enemy fire on 9 October 1776. Two subsequent attempts to attack British warships were thwarted by navigational issues and tides. Turtle functioned as anticipated, but the attack, for reasons detailed in the account taken from the report of David Bushnell of October 1787 and from the journal of James Thacher, October 1776, both reproduced here, did not succeed. The first attack on an enemy vessel by Turtle took place in New York harbor in September 1776. Benjamin Gale to Silas Deane, 7 December 1775 and 1 February 1776 and reproduced here, the British fleet had departed from that harbor before Turtle was operational. Bushnell was the first to demonstrate that gunpowder could be exploded under water and his mine was the first “time bomb,” allowing the operator of the Turtle to attach the mine and then to retire a safe distance before it detonated.īushnell had devised Turtle as a means of breaking the British blockade of Boston harbor but because of problems with the vessel, detailed in the letters of Dr. Finally, the weaponry of Turtle, which consisted of a “torpedo,” or mine that could be attached to the hull of the target ship, was innovative as well. Bushnell was also the first to equip a submersible with a breathing device. To maneuver under water, Turtle was the first submersible to use a screw propeller. Turtle was the first submersible to use water as ballast for submerging and raising the submarine. To achieve these requirements, Bushnell devised a number of important innovations. Designed in 1771-1775 while Bushnell was a Yale College undergraduate, it embodied the four basic requirements for a successful military submarine: the ability to submerge the ability to maneuver under water the ability to maintain an adequate air supply to support the operator of the craft and the ability to carry out effective offensive operations against an enemy surface vessel. Named Turtle because its inventor, David Bushnell, believed the craft resembled “two upper tortoise shells of equal size, joined together,” it saw action in the first days of the American Revolution. Presented here is a collection of documents that concern the submersible Turtle, the world’s first combat submarine. ![]() ![]() The emergence of smartphones has accelerated the development of cutting-edge positioning-based systems since they are contained to have more processing, memory, and battery power. Position information represents a core element in the human-centred activities, assisting in visualising complex environments effectively and providing a representational coordinate for localisation, tracking, and navigation purposes. The recent developments in mobile positioning technologies and the increasing demands of ubiquitous computing have significantly contributed to sophisticated positioning applications and services. Finally, the practical results have significance in designing a cloudlet-based cloud computing system enabling Wi-Fi indoor positioning and navigation. A core cloud manages items that have the same position (i.e., a global position) defined as the corresponding Wi-Fi location. The system was tested in a real environment with the following results: (1) our system autonomously performed actions, such as turning right or left or going straight according to a movement decision algorithm and determined the position within a stable range of Wi-Fi coverage (2) the cloudlet and core cloud can track navigation for an indoor self-driving cart (3) the global and local positions designed for reference access points and a specific position can navigate the self-driving cart to a particular position accurately (4) the moving edge clouds play a role in deciding three action movements (go straight, turn left, and turn right), as well as managing the local position of the items and (5) a core cloud is deployed to store all information for the items, such as their positions and corresponding Wi-Fi locations. Our cloudlet-based cloud computing system provides the reference point data and real-time interactive response for a self-driving indoor cart. In this paper, we propose a cloudlet-based cloud computing system enabling Wi-Fi indoor positioning and navigation through a Wi-Fi located on a one-hop wireless network. Most Wi-Fi-based indoor positioning techniques using wireless received signal strength (RSS)-based methods are affected by the indoor environment and depend on the respective signals from at least three reference access points. Wi-Fi-based indoor positioning for determining accurate wireless indoor location information has become crucial in meeting increasing demands for location-based services by leveraging the Internet of Things (IoT) and ubiquitous connectivity. The article concludes with a brief insight into future directions in indoor positioning and navigation systems. Various evaluation criteria for indoor navigation systems are proposed in this work. Moreover, this article investigates and contrasts the different navigation systems in each category. #Radbeacon dot update frequency Bluetooth#Navigation and positioning systems that utilize pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) methods and various communication technologies, such as Wi-Fi, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) visible light, Bluetooth and ultra-wide band (UWB), are detailed as well. In particular, the paper reviews different computer vision-based indoor navigation and positioning systems along with indoor scene recognition methods that can aid the indoor navigation. This article provides a comprehensive summary of evolution in indoor navigation and indoor positioning technologies. Radio frequency (RF) signals, computer vision, and sensor-based solutions are more suitable for tracking the users in indoor environments. In indoor environments, lack of Global Positioning System (GPS) signals and line of sight with orbiting satellites makes navigation more challenging compared to outdoor environments. Current technological advancements enable users to encapsulate these systems in handheld devices, which effectively increases the popularity of navigation systems and the number of users. Navigation systems help users access unfamiliar environments. All of these techniques present a number of issues, including low precision, high computational complexity, and unreliability due to wireless channel impairments such as multipath effects caused by non line of sight (NLOS) propagation in indoor environments, while most positioning devices lack sufficient computing power. Yet in the literature, in addition to the range-free techniques such as Centroid method and distance vector hop (DV-Hop) technique, typical ranging techniques based on channel state information (CSI), angle of arrival (AoA), time of arrival (ToA), time difference of arrival (TDoA), and radio signal strength indicator (RSSI) using various wireless technologies such as radio frequency identification (RFID), ultra-wide bandwidth (UWB), WiFi, and Bluetooth have been proposed for indoor positioning. All these transformational applications drive the need for accurate localization systems which require lots of resources due to the massive deployment of IoT devices. ![]() ![]() (this can be an alternative to dragon pose, as it targets the groin of the leg drawn in, and can stimulate the hip flexor of the extended leg)ġ0 (1) Release.
